George Steet, Dunedin’s historic main street runs from the iconic Octagon plaza through to the foot of Pine Hill forming the second largest main street in the South island.

Noted by Dunedin City Council (DCC) as the most significant infrastructure project in decades, the project has created a people friendly space that celebrates Dunedin’s heritage, cultural values and storytelling, whilst also providing improved accessibility and an enhanced retail experience.

The DCC design team worked closely with Kāi Tahu (Ngāi Tahu) and Aukaha to weave cultural narratives and principles into the design. Lighting, planting, imagery, paving and the use of whakataukī (proverbs) are all integrated seamlessly into streetscape.

Working in conjunction with Jasmax, Lucas Haining and Isaac Construction, Walkspace supplied a wide range of bespoke bench seating across several stages through 2023 and 2024. Catalogue Walkspace DF_02 Drinks Fountains, BR_01 Bike Racks were employed throughout offering hydration and encouraging alternative forms of transport into the city centre.

In line with the recently completed George Street upgrade, the Retail Quarter project spanned 4 blocks alongside George street with a primary focus on water services, utilities and streetscape renewals.

Walkspace supplied our catalogue E_01 Seats, E_02 Benchs, BR_02 Bike Racks, DF_02 Drinks Fountains and TGR_03 Tree Grates. Each item was customised to meet specific site and user requirements. This ranged from simple colourway treatments through to specific ergonomic updates such as raised armrests for elderly users. The TGR_03 supplied in Cotren steel was modified dimensionally to integrate into the paving plan grid.
